Researching growing conditions

We presume certain things about hosta, hut are they really true?  Light conditions, water amounts, soil types, growth cycles. and growth rates.  They all interconnect to create conditons to let that plant grow.

Over the years of growing hosta in my garden I've noticed somethings are consistent, with others seem to be variable.  I've noticed inconsistent plant behaviors to what I've read in books and online which make me think that the hosta growers may have too generic of an concept of how hosta grow.  Growers even say that 'x' plant is picky about growing.  I've seen some hosta thrive 'better' in non-hosta like conditions.  My thought is what makes it picky. and what conditions improve their growth habits.

Taking this further.  We've talk about sun bleached hosta and properly lighted hostas.  These two exteams are fair assessments, BUT are their some hosta that display better with noticeably different light?

They might all be hosta but my instincts say there's a variation in growing habit that may not have been understood yet.
